My cancer diagnosis story.
On January 8th, 2023 I was diagnosed with stage four metastatic melanoma cancer and told I had six months to a year to live. It was a hard kick to the gut, a huge red stop sign planted directly in the path of my life. Suddenly, I had no future beyond six months, no plans, no hope, no imagination beyond that “deadline”. The good news is, I have received treatments that had extended my life for another year. So here I am in September of 2024. The unfortunate news is, the treatments are no longer effective and I, once again, am dealing with the “six months to a year” prognosis.
Today, I am better equipped to deal with the raw emotions that come with a terminal prognosis. Throughout the last year, through blogs and forums, I have met other cancer survivors who are struggling to survive the impact of their new found reality. My heart goes out to them. I wish for them the opportunity to express themselves, through music, poetry, art, or whatever medium appropriate, in order to find and experience a place of respite and relief from the confusion and anxiety that accompanies that hard put news of finality. I have written and composed a few songs that relate to the experiences of this terminal condition. Hopefully, this music will provide an inspiration to others for an either simple and direct sense of understanding or, better yet, inspiration to create out of their own personal experience a work of art that will provide meaning, clarity, and peace of mind for themselves and others.
I have posted seven songs inspired by the many emotional impacts from dealing with cancer. I have received tremendous support from my friends and family over the past year. The expression of the thoughts and emotions behind these songs have been my saving grace.
Thank you,

The mission of this project is to provide a creative resource and n inspirational format to express, create, and perform music for the purpose of increasing awareness of terminal cancer. Artistic compositions pertain to the development of music, songs and stories that will nurture and inspire hope and self reflection in those cancer survivors who seek a deeper understanding of their journey. The compositions are cancer themed to help survivors relate and identify personal struggles, ways to communicate, listen to and comprehend the emotional and psychological challenges that are inherent in the cancer experience. There are songs of hope, songs of despair, songs of love, of loss, of simple beauty, of mortality, change, heaven, hell, and life.
As a cancer patient and survivor I have made it my mission to create an advocacy program that will seek to address and redress the issues and challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis. The feelings of shock and bewilderment that come with the news can be inexpressible. Music, lyric, and song present a subtle and effective medium for the relating of one's experience to the benefit of another's deeper understanding and reconciliation; therapy for those who are confused, disoriented and in distress. Cancersong provides access to the type of communal support that this medium of music and song can offer. The aim of this mission is take advantage of existing platforms and create new avenues for expression. The ultimate goal is peace of mind, if only for a moment, for those in need.

FOUND YOUR WAY
was created out of the overwhelming support and care received from friends and family over the past year. It is a song of gratitude.
NEVERMORE
was created out of the struggle to face my mortality upon receiving the news of terminal cancer and a prognosis of six months to a year to live. The three themes in this song express the reconciliation of loss; of one's own life, the things in life that are cherished, and the leaving behind of your life/love partner.
BREATHE ME FREE
A song of an eternal resting place, the huge expanse of the Great Basin in Northern Nevada. This song was inspired by frank discussion with family on end of life matters.
ALL I KNOW IS WHAT i SEE
was created from the challenge of dealing with returning home after a lengthy hospital stay and sorting out the confusion and difficulty of re-integrating back into normal routines when everything had changed... dramatically.
JUST LIVIN'
was born of the deep resolution that all that really matters is living in the moment. When all the treatment options are exhausted and the search for clinical trials that may or may not work takes the stage, it is important to realize and embrace your love for life...
and simply
"LIVE FOR WHAT YOU WOULD DIE FOR"
REMARKABLE
A love song for my life's helpmate who has, through the years, stuck with me through thick and thin.
COME UNTO ME
A composition of melody: a melody of the unique human spirit that defines each of our individual beings. We are all each a unique melody of personality and character.
Combined with words of faith: words of faith that have resonated in the human consciousness for two thousand years (Matthew 11:28). Powerful words that ride each melody to create a song, a song of unique and personal relationship to a higher power and a place of respite and peace.
Take a moment and settle yourself into a place where you can find the time and privacy to collect your thoughts and decide what you want to say. Take what has been held in your heart and speak free.
Pick up pen, pencil, or computer and start streaming your thoughts. Write it out. When you have exhausted that thought train, go back and start organizing what you have written into something that will make sense to you and will satisfy your feelings. Keep working and modifying until it feels complete. In essence anything such as poetry, prose, or a short story that helps to express your state of being is acceptable. Remember we are dealing with issues of the heart, mind, and spirit. Let's leave the body and physical problems to another place.
If you play an instrument take some time and see it you can work out a melody that will help to enhance the story. It doesn't have to be complicated or sound professionally produced . It could just be a simple chord or two to back up your poem or lyric. You might be surprised at how things turn out. The most common instrument, of course, is simply your voice. You might want to simply sing it out as softly or as loud as you can. Your idea can be a storyline, a specific lyric, a chord progression, a melody, a rhythmic pattern, or any number of other things. Once you have your idea to get you started, start adding to it until it feels complete.
